Until now, visitor access to the dam was limited to just 800 people per day, and walking was prohibited
Thodupuzha: In a move welcomed by the tourism sector, restrictions on visiting the Idukki Dam are set to be lifted, allowing greater public access and potentially boosting local tourism.
Until now, visitor access to the dam was limited to just 800 people per day, and walking was prohibited. Tourists could only view the dam via expensive buggy car rides on selected days.
These curbs will now be removed following a high-level meeting in Thiruvananthapuram, chaired by Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty and attended by Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine. The meeting was part of a broader review of Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) projects in the Idukki constituency.
The dam is expected to open to the public without these limitations from early next month. The proposal to allow visitors on foot, instead of restricting access to buggy cars alone, was approved during the meeting.
Other Key Decisions
New Government Offices in Moolamattom:
It was also decided to expedite the transfer of KSEB-owned land to establish a Sub Registrar Office and a Sub Treasury Office in Moolamattom. Two plots are currently under consideration: one near the KSRTC depot and another near the fire station. The more suitable plot will be finalised soon.
Modern Crematorium Project:
The meeting also approved the transfer of land identified for a modern public crematorium in Moolamattom.
Tourism Initiatives:
Minister Roshy Augustine urged that work on the Vadakkepuzha tourism project be completed by January.
Additionally, Minister Krishnankutty directed officials to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for land required for the proposed Moolamattom Power House miniature project and a laser light show on the Idukki Dam surface.
