India’s packed sporting calendar has collided head-on with the biggest aviation disruption the country has seen in years.

IndiGo’s wave of cancellations and delays, triggered by crew shortages and new flight duty-time rules, hasn’t just stranded holiday travellers, it’s also thrown professional teams, domestic tournaments and support staff into a logistical scramble.

From rescheduled knockout games in domestic cricket to football clubs landing on matchday, organizers have been forced into emergency plans simply to get players to the venue on time.

How IndiGo crisis is affecting Indian sport

According to multiple reports, the BCCI is firefighting on several fronts as IndiGo’s meltdown overlaps with the busiest phase of the domestic season.

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy knockouts, already shifted from Indore to Pune due to a hotel crunch, now face the added complication of reduced flight options into the city.

Teams from league venues in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Lucknow and Hyderabad, along with umpires and officials, have had to stitch together multi-leg journeys using a mix of limited flights, trains and road travel.

The disruptions also affect age-group events such as the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy and U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, which rely heavily on domestic air links.

As per BCCI president Mithun Manhas, the board has allowed a “buffer” for late arrivals and is open to postponing games where travel chaos makes timely reporting impossible, with match officials empowered to decide once teams reach the venue.

Football teams’ travel plans disrupted

The impact isn’t limited to cricket. Indian Super League side Mumbai City FC saw their preparation for the AIFF Super Cup semi-final against FC Goa severely hit after an IndiGo-linked delay left the squad stuck at the airport for nearly half a day.

Reports state the team’s scheduled afternoon flight from Mumbai to Goa eventually took off around midnight, with the players checking into their hotel at about 2 a.m. on matchday.

Head coach Petr Kratky admitted the exhausting travel showed in the opening half-hour, when Mumbai conceded twice and ultimately lost 2–1 despite a spirited fightback.

At least 14 IndiGo flights were cancelled and over 25 services to Goa delayed by more than three hours on the same day, underlining how a single carrier’s crisis can ripple across competitions.

Leagues and federations will need more diversified travel partnerships, built-in contingency windows and clearer protocols to protect player welfare.

As aviation normalises in the coming weeks, sport’s planners will be judged on whether they treat this as a one-off crisis or a lesson in long-term resilience.
