As per BCCI president Mithun Manhas, the board has allowed a “buffer” for late arrivals and is open to postponing games where travel chaos makes timely reporting impossible, with match officials empowered to decide once teams reach the venue.
Football teams’ travel plans disrupted
The impact isn’t limited to cricket. Indian Super League side Mumbai City FC saw their preparation for the AIFF Super Cup semi-final against FC Goa severely hit after an IndiGo-linked delay left the squad stuck at the airport for nearly half a day.
Reports state the team’s scheduled afternoon flight from Mumbai to Goa eventually took off around midnight, with the players checking into their hotel at about 2 a.m. on matchday.
Head coach Petr Kratky admitted the exhausting travel showed in the opening half-hour, when Mumbai conceded twice and ultimately lost 2–1 despite a spirited fightback.
At least 14 IndiGo flights were cancelled and over 25 services to Goa delayed by more than three hours on the same day, underlining how a single carrier’s crisis can ripple across competitions.
Leagues and federations will need more diversified travel partnerships, built-in contingency windows and clearer protocols to protect player welfare.
As aviation normalises in the coming weeks, sport’s planners will be judged on whether they treat this as a one-off crisis or a lesson in long-term resilience.
