Breaking Update: Here’s a clear explanation of the latest developments related to Breaking News:Union Minister Jitendra Singh calls for whole-of– What Just Happened and why it matters right now.
Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh has called for a whole-of-society approach to effectively combat obesity. The Minister made these remarks while addressing the inaugural session of the two-day Asia Oceania Conference on Obesity (AOCO) in New Delhi today. He also emphasised the need to use weight-reducing or anti-obesity drugs very judiciously. He said that obesity is a complex, chronic and relapsing disorder, and not merely a cosmetic or lifestyle concern.
The Minister highlighted that 63 per cent of deaths in India are linked to non-communicable diseases, which are, in one way or another, related to obesity. The Minister cautioned against the growing commercialisation and misinformation surrounding obesity management, warning against unscientific claims. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on small, sustainable changes in food habits and daily routines reflects a clear recognition of obesity as a national priority.
He said this approach is closely aligned with initiatives such as FIT India, Khelo India, and the broader vision of preventive healthcare. The Asia Oceania Conference on Obesity, a flagship conference of the Asia Oceania Association for the Study of Obesity (AOASO), aims to empower physicians, researchers, and policymakers by sharing global best practices, advancing research collaboration, and strengthening evidence-based management of obesity. The event was attended by several leading experts.
